Subject: Slow Glass Catalogue #13
Status: O
Here is the Slow Glass catalogue #13.
Remember to let me know if you don't want this posted to you any
more (excepting those of you who requested the catalogue once only).
Feel free to forward/hardcopy this mail to anyone who is
interested. If you want catalogue back issues (#4 and #6 onwards),
I can arrange to have them e-mailed.
Remember, don't send your order to me (see disclaimer below). Send
them to Justin Ackroyd at Slow Glass Books.
Disclaimer: I have no connection with Slow Glass Books apart from
being an extremely satisfied customer. My comments in no way
reflect the views or policies of Slow Glass (and vice-versa).
This month's wretched random roundabout ramblings...
----------------------------------------------------
[
These are just my own thoughts as I flip through the catalogue.
Pay attention at your own risk!
]
The humour section has a lot of worthwhile titles. I can't
recommend too strongly any of the "Bloom County", "Far Side"
or "Calvin and Hobbes" collections.
Interesting new releases are:
Glen Cook; _The Black Company_ and _The Silver Spike_
* I haven't read these yet, but I am told,
by a reliable source, that they are very good.
Much better than _Starfishers_, apparently.
Linda Gray; _Mama's Boy_
* Gray is a reasonable horror writer. I hope
that the plot is not just a _Psycho_ clone as
the blurb suggests.
Michael Kandel; _Strange Invasion_
* Looks like great fun. Spectra special editions
are usually of high quality.
Victor Koman; _The Jehovah Contract_
* This could be a very amusing book.
Larry Niven & Steven Barnes; _The Barsoom Project_
* The sequel to _Dream Park_, which was a
total waste of time. Two dimensional characters,
boring plot, puerile technology, the works!
Niven and Barnes have, however, collaborated
on some realy great stuff; the most recent was
_Legacy of Heorot_. Might be worth a look.
Tim Powers; _The Stress of Her Regard_
* Powers is a consistently great novellist.
Even if you don't want to shell out for this
new hardback, you should get around to reading
some of his stuff.
Fred Saberhagen; _The Holmes-Dracula File_
* Saberhagen tends to write a lot of fun
trash. This falls firmly in that category.
_The Dracula Tapes_ are also worth checking out.
Judith Tarr; _Ars Magica_
* Many would say that Tarr is a great fantasy writer.
I'll admit that she can write well occasionally.
I don't know about this book in particular, but it
looks like an original plot.
Gene Wolfe; _There are Doors_
* This novel has had nothing but rave reviews
since it was released. Now it's available in
paperback, and you don't have an excuse not to
read it any more.
Sheri Tepper; _Marianne, the Magus and the Manticore_
* I liked this novel (first of three) enough
to be ordering the sequels. I still can't work
out exactly *why* I liked it, however...
There's not much in the way of local releases this month, but
do get a copy of _Sourcery_ by Terry Pratchett now its in
paperback. Light fantasy, in an extremely funny prose style.
########################################################################
Come on people! How about posting some pico-reviews to aus.sf?

CATALOGUE 13
Welcome to the second year of catalogues from Justin Ackroyd, alias Slow Glass
Books. Thank you one and all for the help, advice, requests, and general badgering
that has got my act together so that these catalogues and all that results from them,
has made this business what it is today.
In this catalogue you will find listed an animation book, an extentended humour
section, the September U.S. new releases (and a few that I have missed in the last two
months), a mystery section, some art books, and a few local releases. I hope there's
something there to please you.
Orders from this catalogue are due back by: JULY 20TH 1989

own record. Just remember to put your name and address on your order. If you wish to
receive confirmation of your order, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Birdie Sparrow: he and the
ghost haunting him were sea-
soned veterans. Hans Wager:
the enemy didn't worry him
as much as his own tank.
Dick Suilin: he started as
a civilian; by the end he
wasn't sure he was human.
If they and the rest of a
mixed bag of recruits and
battle-fatigued vets can't
relieve a district capital,
the war is over. And the

FARREN, Mick
THE LAST STAND OF THE
DNA COWBOYS
___ BAL SF-O(?)-N $6.95
I would take a guess that this
book is related to Farren's
earlier trilogy ("The Quest
for the DNA Cowboys", "The
Neural Atrocity", and
Synaptic Manhunt" - all are
out of print!), but whether
or not this is just a reprint
or a rewrite, or a continua-
tion, I do not know - yet.

FIELDS, Morgan
DEADLY HARVEST
___ ZEB H-O-N $6.95
FORD, John M.
THE SCHOLARS OF THE NIGHT
___ TOR FIC-R1-N $7.50
Thomas Hansard is a brilliant
historical analyst, a genius
at extracting the truth from
forgotten documents. A profes-
sor at a small New England
college, Hansard has a second,
secret career with The White
Group, a "consulting agency"
with shadowy Washington con-
nections. When Hansard's work
exposes one of his closest
friends, Allan Berenson, as
a Soviet agent, and when
Berenson dies mysteriously,
the connections seem all too
clear. As Hansard returns to
his reseach, Allan Berenson's
murder sets in motion a deadly
chain reaction. A change of
pace for Ford, but very worth-
while. Highly recommended.
GENTILE, Gary
A TIME OF DRAGONS

Thousand Willows". The other

FOUNDATION'S FRIENDS
___ TOR SF-O-AO HC $26.95
On the 50th anniversary of
Isaac Asimov's first appearance
in print, Martin Greenberg has
assembled a unique tribute to
Asimov. Orson Scott Card con-
tributes a novella about the
establishment of the Second
Foundation. Connie Willis has
a 94 year old Asimov being
petitioned by the robots to
repeal the Laws of Robotics.

don't use machinery to get
the oil out of this planet.
They've got something better:
"oil field critters," dinosaur-
sized aliens.

STRANGE INVASION
___ BAN SF-O-N $6.95
A "Spectra Special Edition".
Wally Griffith is the only man
who can save the earth from
imminent alien invasion. Or is
it just another hallucination?
Wally can't be sure. He's cer-
tainly seen some strange things
before, under the influence of
the medication he must take for
his neurological condition, but
the warning about the aliens
seemed so real. Black humour
in the Philip K. Dick vein.
KESSEL, John

He is preparing himself for
that dreadful day. George
suspects that the Aliens are
already here. George is right.

NIGHTTOWN
___ VIK H-O-N HC $23.95
Klein uses the five boroughs
of New York City as the stage
for a sinister murder and its

KOMAN, Victor
THE JEHOVAH CONTRACT
___ AVO SF-R1-N $6.50
Back in the 1960's, he'd been
a professional assassin - the
best in the business. But his-
tory had moved on, and Dell
Ammo found himself drinking
alone in a sleazy little office
in the bombed-out Arco Tower
in Los Angeles, 1999. Then Emil
Zacharias walked in, and it was
a whole new ball game. Emil
Zacharias, the infamous mil-
lionaire evangelist, had an
unusual assignment: he wanted
Dell to assassinate the Lord God
Almighty. And he's offered an
unusual form of payment: eternal
life. Dell took the case. After
all, the evangelist was crazy
enough to pay all the expenses
needed to find God, which could
take a very long time. But then
Ann Perrine came into the pic-
ture; and with her help, and
that of an ancient Hollywood
witch and a twelve-year-old
telepathic hooker, they picked
up God's trail sooner than Dell
had expected. Or hoped. And
that was when the "signs" star-
ted to appear. Well-paced and
entertaining, but leaves quite
a few religious questions
hanging.
KOONTZ, Dean R.
SHATTERED
___ BER H-R-N $6.95
MCCAFFREY, Anne
DRAGONSDAWN
___ BAL SF-R1-N $7.95
The few thousand colonists that
came to Pern intended to keep
the planet unspoiled. Then
disaster struck as deadly
spores, like threads, fell
from the sky,devouring every-
thing in their path. Some
solution had to be found if
the colony was to survive.
Then some colonists noticed
that a small dragonlike lizard
that inhabited their new world
were breathing fire on the
Thread (as it became called)
and teleporting to safety. If
only, they thought, if the
dragons were big enough to
carry humans. And so they set
their most talented geneticist
to work.
MASTERTON, Graham
WALKERS
___ TOR H-O-N HC $25.50
The doctors and the nurses who
staffed The Oaks fled into the
night, screaming that the luna-
tics had killed a priest and
vanished. Investigations reve-
aled no signs of the madmen.
All had disappeared without a
trace. Black magic was the key
- but the blood spilled that
terrible night was not enough
to liberate the inmates.

SATAN'S SERENADE
___ POC H-O-N $6.95

to free Earth - and ultimately
the solar system - from the
stranglehold of the United

THE STRESS OF HER REGARD
___ ACE F-O-N HC $23.95
A vampire novel unlike any
other. "The Stress of Her
Regard" sweeps the reader
from the unholy underworld
of 19th century London to
the obscurely-cursed peaks
of the Swiss Alps, and onto a
Venice and Rome uncatalogued
in any sane tour-book. This
horrifying epic traces the
tumultuous lives of the poets
Byron, Keats and Shelley -
and the unhuman woman who
inspired them and loved them,
to their ruin.
